The project is located in the town of Ribes de Freser, in the eastern Pyrenees,

Province of Girona. The landscape is rural, the vegetation is dense and the landscape is rugged,

especially in winter.

Ribes features a train station with two lines. The RENFE line

connects Barcelona with France. The cog railway

connects the town with the Nuria Valley (sanctuary/resort located at 2000

metres). It can be reached via cog railway or on foot.

The project focuses on the cog railway and aims to cover the entirety of

the platform to protect trains after-hours from

vandalism and extremely cold temperatures in the winter.

The idea is to create an open-space building big enough to house

four trains and small enough to limit the environmental impact.

Dry construction is used primarily: a three-dimensional metal structure

featuring small section profiles (10-12 cm diameter) and

pre-fabricated panels for the facade. The construction can therefore be carried

out with the least possible impact on trains’ regular schedule.

The north-south sawtooth roof is designed as a

large photovoltaic plant.

Using reflective and translucent elements on the facade the aim is to, on the one hand,

reduce the building’s visual impact and, secondly, to let in natural light

to the interior.
